Georgestown neighbourhood guide

Get to know Georgestown north of downtown St. John’s, with community context, Century Park and nearby Bannerman Park.

Avalon Peninsula
Newfoundland & Labrador

Georgestown is a neighbourhood north of downtown St. John's with a history extending beyond the original village. The neighbourhood association describes an area incorporating former Monkstown and Tubridtown and parts of the Belvedere Estate, including Circular Road and Belvedere Street. That wider identity helps explain why two Georgestown addresses can have different street settings. Georgestown Neighbourhood Association

Century Park, nearby Bannerman Park and the streets connecting this area to downtown provide useful starting points for getting to know it. The St. John's overview covers the wider city.

A neighbourhood name with several layers of history

The association traces the original village to the early nineteenth century and describes the later Neighbourhood Improvement Area as larger than that original settlement. Its account includes Military Road, Monkstown Road, Empire Avenue, Bonaventure Avenue and part of Carpasian Road as surrounding reference points. Use this as community context rather than a surveyed boundary for a property. Neighbourhood history and setting

The history gives the neighbourhood context, while the address gives a home its practical setting. For an owner writing a listing, naming the street and explaining the unit's entrance and outdoor space is more useful than relying on the neighbourhood label alone.

Century Park and nearby Bannerman Park

Century Park on Hayward Avenue is a local recreation reference: the City's sports directory lists a basketball court there. Bannerman Park offers a different setting nearby, between Military Road, Bannerman Road, Circular Road and Rennie's Mill Road. Its municipal page lists walking trails, open space, a playground, a pool, splash pad and The Loop. City sports directory and Bannerman Park

These offer different ways to spend time outdoors: a local court at Century Park and the broader park setting at Bannerman. Follow the route from the home to the entrance you intend to use, and check current seasonal information for the pool, splash pad or skating.

Historic character and the individual building

An area's history and a property's formal heritage status are different questions. The City maintains information about designated buildings and Heritage Areas, with separate guidance for proposed work. Do not assume that every Georgestown home is designated, or that age alone answers what changes can be made. City heritage information

Before budgeting for an exterior change, use the City's mapping and heritage guidance to check the address and discuss the intended work with City staff. The heritage permit page is a starting point for that discussion, not an approval for a particular repair. City maps and heritage building permit guidance

For a rental handover, repair records and instructions for the actual windows, heating and ventilation help explain how the home works. This is general preparation advice: the neighbourhood's history does not establish the condition or running costs of a particular home.

Parking, daily journeys and an accurate listing

Separate an included off-street space from the possibility of parking on the street. If a home relies on a residential permit, check the current arrangements for that address with the City rather than treating a neighbourhood name as eligibility. The City's permit information expressly says a residential permit does not guarantee a space in front of a house. Parking permit information

For regular trips, use Metrobus's current schedules and trip tools alongside a walk from the home's entrance to the relevant stop or destination. That gives a prospective tenant something more useful than an unverified 'minutes from downtown' claim.
